The Smart Irrigator advises farmers on precise fertilizer applications needed by the crop at different time intervals during their growth cycle. We currently have 46 crops incorporated into the system including: potatoes, cabbages, pepper, watermelon, maize, beans, grazing grass, onions, tomatoes, egg plant, cucumbers, lettuce, celery, carrots, pineapples, bananas and groundnuts. The system is flexible such that more crops and their agronomic parameters can be added from our end depending on user demand. The fertilizer recommendations are currently based on the three most critical nutrients including: nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium. We have selected to use straight fertilizers of the nutrients commonly provided as UREA, Triple Superphosphate (TSP) and Muriate of Potash (MOP). Fertilizer applications are sent at the time of planting, during the initial development stage and during the mid-development stage when the crops needs the highest amounts of nutrients. The fertilizer recommendation is based on the size of the land that the farmer specifies and type of crop they are growing. The farmer also specifies their land sizes in either hectares, acres and/or square metres. The system sends to the farmer information on the number of 50 Kg bags that the farmer needs to apply during the different growth stages. The values of 50 Kg bags can be reduced to number of kilos needed for a smaller plot since they come as ratios or in decimals. The provided data is based on the land size provided by the farmer. The interested user and who opts for this service also pays a monthly fee.
